Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that has been used for about 25 years.   It integrates many of the successful elements of a range of therapeutic approaches, yet there are aspects of EMDR that are unique. In particular, the therapist leads a patient in a series of lateral eye movements while the patient simultaneously focuses on various aspects of a disturbing memory or thought.  The left – right eye movements in EMDR therapy are a form of “bilateral stimulation”. Other forms of bilateral stimulation used in our clinic include alternating bilateral sound using headphones and alternating tactile simulation using a handheld device that vibrates or taps the hands.

EMDR therapy is applicable for a wide range of psychological problems that result from overwhelming life experiences.

EMDR has demonstrated significant effect with trauma, pain, anxiety, panic, depression, stress, attachment problems, and emotional distress.

During our biofeedback session, highly sensitive sensors are placed on your skin (usually neck, finger or ear). These sensors send signals to a monitor, which display a sound, flash of light, or image that represents your heart and breathing rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, or muscle activity.

When you're under stress, these functions change. Your heart rate speeds up, your muscles tighten, your blood pressure rises, you start to sweat, and your breathing quickens. You can see these stress responses as they happen in real time, and then get immediate feedback as you try to control them.

Several different relaxation exercises are used in biofeedback therapy:

  • Deep breathing
  • Progressive muscle relaxation
  • Guided imagery
  • Mindfulness meditation

All helping you learn to let go of negative emotions

Hypnosis is a therapeutic technique in which clinicians make suggestions to individuals who have undergone a procedure designed to relax them and focus their minds. ... Hypnosis can also help people change their habits, such as quitting smoking.  Simply put, hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention or concentration, often associated with relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. ... The suggestions given to people under hypnosis appear to be an important part of the mechanism through which the procedure works .

For people with anxiety issues, severe stress, or depression, this can help ease the symptoms. But hypnosis is not a panacea, and is most effective when it's used in conjunction with therapy and lifestyle changes. Particularly for long-term, chronic problems, it may take about 6-8 sessions to see results.

Additionally, clinical hynotherapy can be highly effective for a wide  range of conditions and can help you gain control of your moods (not just for losing weight and stopping smoking!!)
